When I write I have the chance to think about everything I want to say and how to say it. If I say it wrong, I can go back, delete it, and try again.
Hello dear reader.
Today is day 3 of a mind numbing headache. I got about two hours of sleep last night because of it, so along with this insane pain I’m exhausted. I’m going to try to write a post that makes sense, but I can’t promise anything.
I need to do something to distract my mind from how horrible I feel. That itself is a challenge. Reading hurts…too much light. Watching TV… same thing. Writing… hurts like hell but I’m doing it anyway. Pain meds? I can’t take them again for five more hours. Muscle relaxers… not helping at all.
So why am I writing when it hurts to do it? I’m writing out of desperation. I’m hoping one of the wonderful people who read my blog (I hit 150 followers yesterday 👏) has an idea for how can I distract my mind from the pain when I need to be laying down in a dark, quiet room?
I’m having trouble communicating because of the pain. But I can do a better job writing than speaking. When I write I have the chance to think about everything I want to say and how to say it. If I say it wrong, I can go back, delete it, and try again.
I know this isn’t a very cheerful post, but it’s my truth right now and you, dear reader, deserve nothing less than complete honesty.
I’m seriously open to any ideas. There’s a comment box at the end of this post. Please feel free to use it.
Until next time…
There isn’t a big life lesson or any words of wisdom today. I just wanted to share my poem with you.
Hello dear reader.
I want to tell you about a new adventure I’ve started. A better way to say that might be that I’ve rediscovered an old adventure. When I was younger I wrote a lot of poetry. I remember winning a poetry contest when I was in the 3rd or 4th grade. I got an ice cream sundae for a prize. What a treat!!
Recently I joined a site called FanStory. They have writing contests on there for poetry, flash fiction, essay, etc. I entered one and took 2nd place. It’s a cinquain poem, which has the following parameters:
The traditional cinquain has five lines and a strict structure based on syllable count.
Line 1 – 2 syllables
Line 2 – 4 syllables
Line 3 – 6 syllables
Line 4 – 8 syllables
Line 5 – 2 syllables
My FanStory bio shows up on this link. I can’t figure out how to get it off, so just scroll past that, or read it too if you’d like. The poem is right under it.
There are two more contests I’m signed up for which are essay instead of poetry. I’ll let you know how those go.
There isn’t a big life lesson or any words of wisdom today. I just wanted to share my poem with you. This is a big deal for me, putting my writing out there to be judged. It’s different from the blog. I don’t feel that what I write on here is judged.
Anyway, I hope the poem brightens your day a little bit.
Until next time…
I decided if I really wanted to do anything with my story I was going to have to make it a priority.
Hello dear reader.
I got my biopsy results yesterday. The pollups they found were pre- cancerous. Since they’ve been removed, I’m fine. I have to have another colonoscopy in five years.
Honestly, I’m not sure which is the better news; that I have nothing to worry about or that I don’t have to do another colonoscopy for five whole years! Either way, things are good.
On another note, I started a novel several years ago called The Gatherer. I wrote about 50 pages of it and then reached a point where I got stuck. I had no idea where the story should go from there. So I put it away. Over the years I’ve pulled it out and thought about different ways to get it going again. Life would get busy and I’d put it away again. Lately the story’s been in my head a lot. I realized life will always get busy and I will always have too many things to do. I decided if I really wanted to do anything with my story I was going to have to make it a priority. So that’s what I’m doing. I pulled it out yesterday and worked on character bios and an outline. I put the first chapter through an editing program, then onto this program called Novel. It’s like Scrivener, but much simpler to use. I also put my bios on there and part of the outline.
While I’m working on finishing my novel, I’m also going to write some short stories to put into writing contests and submit to magazines. I’ll have a much better chance of a publisher accepting the novel if I’ve already had short stories published.
This is where you, dear reader, come in. I’m looking for short story ideas. There are many sites with story prompts, but I want to know what you think I should write. Why? Because you know me and you know how I write. So I think you’ll have more personalized ideas than a random story prompt. I’ll make you a deal. If you give me an idea I use, I’ll dedicate the story to you.
So I’m giving you good news and asking for your help all in the same blog 😮.
What do you think? What kind of short stories should I write? Leave your ideas in the comments section below. I’ll really appreciate it!
Until next time…
My goal is to focus on the positive as much as possible.
Hello dear reader,
It seems everyone is as stumped about renaming this blog as I am. I honestly didn’t expect it to be so difficult! But I’m sure I’ll figure it out.
So what’s new with me? Actually, there are a couple of things.
The one I’m most excited about is that I’m going to enter a short story writing contest. I’m taking a brief course on writing short stories that has already opened my eyes to some things I had never really thought of before. Of course, dear reader, when my entry is complete I’ll be sharing it with all of you 😏.
I’m also taking a course about WordPress called “WordPress Apprentice.” There are tons of courses out there, but I’m a technotard and end up more confused after the class than I was before I watched the videos. This is the best one I’ve found. I’ve been trying to learn more about the website part of things, and just kind of winging it in the meantime. I’m certain that’s been obvious. Now you can look forward to the site improving slowly but surely from here on out.
I interviewed a possible new caregiver. I need desperately to find one. I simply can’t keep up with even basic housework these days. (Anyone looking for a job with a really great boss?) I’ll let you know how that turns out. 🤞
So there’s the exciting stuff. It obviously doesn’t take much to excite me these days 😉.
The not so exciting stuff is that I’m stuck laying in a dark room with a massive headache again. Today’s day two. Hopefully there won’t be a day three.
And last but not least, my PC doctor had me do this thing called “Cologaurd” so I could avoid the colonoscopy that I’m about three years overdue for. They mail you a kit, you put a stool sample in it, and mail it back. Easy peasy. They look for DNA markers for cancer and /or other issues. Mine came back positive. That does not mean that I have cancer. It does mean that I have to do the colonoscopy I was hoping to avoid. The procedure itself isn’t that bad. It’s the prep that sucks! They want everything sqeeky clean (not that I blame them) so I’ll get to spend all of the night before running back and forth to the bathroom. Such fun!! 🤪 I’m scheduled to have it done on the 27th. I will, of course, let you know how that turns out.
So there you have it. My goal is to focus on the positive as much as possible. Learning new things and writing both make me feel happy and productive.
Anyone who has thoughts about short story writing, how to set up a really good website, a new name for the blog, or any other thoughts… Please feel free to share them.
Until next time…
Reading is one of my weapons. I can escape the pain, let the story take me to another place. I’ve used books for that all of my life.
Hello dear reader
I’ve talked a lot about things that Chiari has taken away from me. Today I found something new that I can do whether Chiari likes it or not! I should probably slow down and make some sense here. I’m just really excited.
OK, let me back up here. I love to write. My life’s goal is to be published before I die. The best thing anyone who wants to write can do is read…anything and everything. This is great for me because I’ve loved to read for as long as I can remember.
More recently, I’ve been reading some different authors. I’ve come across some books that have been total disappointments. But I’ve also stumbled on some incredible books! And when that happens…it’s hard to explain. It’s like finding treasure. It’s surprising and amazing and you don’t want it to end.
Some wonderful surprises include Christopher Moore (A Dirty Job), Helene Wecker (The Golem and the Jinni), John Green & David Leviathan (Will Grayson, Will Grayson), and most recently Carolyn Kepnes (You). I’m sure some of you are (have been) aware of some of them. But I wasn’t and my life has been improved as a result of my discovery of them. By the way, if you don’t know any of these, I’ve just given you your summer reading list.
That’s all good, but still not clearing up what the excitement is about, right? Well, today I made another discovery. I found a site (actually more than one) where they give you books for free. You choose a book to read and then you write an honest review on it. The only requirement is that you have to have a place to put the review. So this isn’t just awesome for me, it’s great for you too. The reviews go right here on this little blog for you to enjoy or debate or whatever you’d like to do.
I started this post by saying that I had found something that Chiari couldn’t take from me. What does any of this have to do with Chiari? Reading is one of my weapons. I can escape the pain, let the story take me to another place. I’ve used books for that all of my life.
I know this isn’t really that big of a deal, but it’s a positive that I can see. It makes me happy. And I’m going to do it!
I have one final thing on this topic. I’d absolutely love to hear about what you’re reading (besides this, of course ;-O). And as always, feel free to tell me how you feel or ask a question.
Until next time….
Hello dear reader.
Before I say anything else, i need to apologize for my long absence. It was caused by many factors which I’m not going to list here. Bottom line….. I’m very story. It won’t happen again. Please forgive me?
On to better news…
This is Duke, the newest member of our little family. He is 8 months old. He had a very rough start in life. He was found living under an abandoned trailer at an Indian reservation in Arizona. He was with his mother and a younger litter of puppies. Duke and his mother were both literally skeletal (we have pictures, but I won’t do that to you). The younger litter was almost dead from dehydration since the mother had no nutrients to make milk from. There is a lady out there who goes out onto the reservation rescuing dogs. I don’t know her name, but God bless her! Duke was so afraid of people that it took two months of her bringing food out there to him before he would go with her.
Duke needed a place to feel safe and secure, a place flowing with food and water. It took a couple days (of course) for him to relax. But I think you’ll agree he has done that now…
He is stretched out on the couch hugging the toy he was playing with when he fell asleep. Yes, the tip of his ear is missing. That’s part of that rough start too.
Duke is a shepherd mix. He howls like a husky and has spots on his belly like a healer…his face kind of has that shape too…so we think he is a shepherd/husky/healer. Whatever he’s made up of, he is just as sweet as he can be!
On to other news…Wow! I heard that in a TV anchor-person voice! Weird!…
I finally got my MRI done last week and will see the doctor to discuss the results a week from Thursday (the 6th). I should know then where we need to go from here to try to get some semblance of my life back. That’s a pretty important date for me. Of course I’ll post about it.
Those of you who are waiting for more of “Shining Moon” won’t be waiting much longer. The next part will be posted by the end of the week.
Thank you for your patience, your support, and your willingness to read a semi-crazy woman’s writing.
Until next time….
